Supporting Robins becomes more important around February here in Ontario. Our fluctuating thaws and freezes can leave them in the cold without food. They tend to roam deeper into the woods to survive off of berries, but return in February when those resources deplete. This is when we often see people proclaiming spring, because they are seeing the 'return' of robins. They come back to feast on insects just below ground surface with the thaws that we get, but when the next snow or ice storm comes and freezes and covers the ground they are left looking for food.
