Nyjer birdseed is one of the favourite seeds of goldfinches, Pine Siskins, Common Redpolls and other small-billed seed-eating birds. We’ve also seen nuthatches, chickadees, doves, Downy Woodpeckers, and other small birds eating it. Will not germinate in your lawn as it is sterilized before it comes to Canada shores. A bonus to feeding nyjer seed? Squirrels typically ignore it! So hang those nyjer feeders and enjoy the finches and other birds! As small as it is, a nyjer seed does have a shell. If you think birds aren’t eating the seed because you see some on the ground, examine it more closely: you are likely seeing the thin nyjer hulls.
