SOLITARY MASON BEE HOUSE
WHY MASON BEES:
-
Pollinate 10xs more than honey bees
-
Non-aggressive, solitary bee and cannot excavate their own holes
SELECTING A SITE:
-
Set house out in Early Spring (when chance of frost is low and blossoms are starting to swell)
-
Place about 6-7ft above the ground near garden or woodpile or side of building
-
South or south-east facing is best and away from prevailing winds
MASON BEE SEASON:
-
Only lasts about 8 weeks
-
Come out of dormancy early spring and emerge from their tubes. They mate, pollinate and lay eggs in the tubes for the following 6-8 weeks. Over the summer, the eggs develop into larvae and then new adults, which become dormant within their tubes at the onset of cold weather
WINTER STORAGE
-
A mason bee house should NOT be moved during active nesting season
-
Move to a shed or unheated garage for protection in fall. Bees must remain cold over winter to trigger dormancy
-
Set outside in early spring again
